Chinese Tea Table # 2
I built this table for our new company office. It’s modest in dimensions but very high quality live-edge seasoned hardwood. It’s a small space so I wanted to build something understated.
There are a few live-edge slab dealers on craigslist in Somerville/Cambridge that bring seasoned wood in from New Hampshire. This was my first time buying wood for a tea table so there was a bit of sticker shock but it was a nice piece.
We tried to pick a slab with some irregularity/character
Edwin breaking some welds to remove the upper section
Sugar maple is rock hard. I definitely don’t recommend cutting it this way.
Jane takes up the chisel
Two coats of Tung oil and screwed down to base
I haven’t figured out a good source for stumps or anything like that in the Boston area yet, so I found a cheap side table that could be re-purposed for a base.
And it’s off
A hack job, but easy to fix with the belt sander
Coronavirus outbreak creates some free time to finish the table. Final chiseling of the drain and drilling the drain (not pictured)
